About the Author
Eleanor Roosevelt was the First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945. She also served as First Lady of New York, on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, and on the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women. She died in 1962. I loved Eleanor Roosevelt but this rewrite of her book was filled with flaws. First the publishers give first year of publication as 2018, which is not true, the original was first published in 1932. This confused the children I teach. The kids then started pointing out inaccuracies eg trash collectors operate in pairs, no they don't certainly not in Massachusetts or DC, two places I've lived. I don't recall seeing them operate in pairs anywhere else. Not all towns have a mayor, most have city managers, book didn't have this. In all this is a sloppy rewrite using Roosevelt's name. I resent the fact that so little attention was paid to helping our kids become good citizens.
I purchased book as a gift for a dear, Activist friend. Both my husband and I read before gifting. Best description of gerrymandering I have found as well as simple to understand 'how government works'. Civics needs to be a required subject in schools. So few of us really understand much about government.
Written for children to really understand. Eleanor Roosevelt appears to know how to keep even my 5 yr old grandson listening. He still wears his Bernie Sanders sticker on his skateboard helmet, lol!
