Review

“Vintage Anne Rice—a lushly written, gothic … metaphysical tale. This time, with werewolves.” —The Wall Street Journal “I want to howl at the moon over this. . . . Rice’s style [is] as solid and engaging as anything she has written since her early vampire chronicle fiction.” —Alan Cheuse, The Boston Globe “A fast-paced, heady romp that ranks with [Rice’s] best…. Feisty and terrific fun.” —Joy Tipping, Dallas Morning News  “Intoxicating.” —USA Today  “A delectable cocktail of old-fashioned lost-race adventure, shape-shifting and suspense, brightened by enticing hints of a secret history.” —Elizabeth Hand, The Washington Post“One part Beauty and the Beast love story, one part meditation on morality and immortality, and one part superman tale…. I love Anne Rice, I really do. At her best, she's inventive, seriously entertaining and borders on deep. At her worst, well, you can ponder how anyone can love dressing male characters in turtlenecks as much as she does (a lot. She loves it a lot). She's in a rut with this book, albeit a fun rut. Let's review the elements of an Anne Rice rut- 1) man turns into "preternatural" being due to being bitten by another "preternatural" being 2) man discovers and relishes his great new powers and probable immortality 3) man struggles with leaving his mortal life behind 4) man has an intimidating mother 5) workaholic genius woman doctors 6) Old houses/renovation 7) Turtlenecks 8) Porsches 9) self-funded archeology 10) lots of sex 11) flannel nightgowns 12) Catholics 13) Night 14) Feeding on evil doers 15) manic genius teenagers 16) fantastic wealth, no strings attached.

If I am totally honest, I wasn't real excited about reading this book. I just kept thinking, do I really want to read a book about werewolves? The answer was a resounding NO. I bought the book because I love Anne Rice novels. By the time I had made it to chapter 5 I was totally absorbed in the story. Anne Rice has a way of drawing you into her stories, making you care about the people in her novels. You become emotionally invested in what is happening to the characters. If you are looking for full moon transformations, mindless killing, and the cliche werewolf story - you won't find it in this book. I don't think it is a book about werewolves as much as it is a story about a man transforming and seeing the world in a different perspective. Yes the Wolf Gift changes him, but to me the book was a story of choices, learning, and understanding. Of course I am sure everyone who reads it gets something unique out of it. I was enthralled by how the Wolf Gift made the main character seek out innocent people who are being harmed, how he questioned whether or not he was good or evil. You fear for his safety, you want him to get the answers he is seeking. Half-way into the book I wanted "The Wolf Gift" myself! :) I can't remember another werewolf story or movie making me feel that way.By chapter 39 when answers starting coming, I was smiling at the history of mankind. I really enjoyed this book. I love that is not a typical werewolf story. I enjoyed all of the characters and I am looking forward to the next chronicle.

In my college days after a viewing of the then new Queen of the Damned movie I became curious about the source material for the film. I started at the beginning and devoured (with few exceptions) pretty much every book Anne Rice had written. As I was reading the Queen of the Damned novel (the book is WAY better than the movie btw) I took note of a comment in the novel regarding werewolves. Since werewolves exist in this universe I hoped maybe one day Anne Rice would grace us with a book about these creatures. Well, lo and behold she did! It had been awhile since she had written a book set in this universe so I was a little anxious if it would hold up to her other works. As soon as I started reading I was drawn right back into that world and fell in love with this new group of characters. Reading Anne Rice again after so long felt like catching up with an old friend. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and hope she writes many more about these wonderful characters.

Not Anne Rice's best characters, they did not inspire my loyalty. I could not envision the bestial love scenes without feeling a bit ill-- maybe I lack imagination. I speak as a person who owns most of the Witching Hour series and maybe all of the Vampire Chronicles. I loved the narrative book of Christ the Lord-- it was amazing. So when I tell you all that I did not love this, I just didn't.

I read a lot of reviews how bad this book is. But I finally have read it by myself to make my own opinion. And I strongly disagree with the ones who says it's bad.I give five stars because I really liked plot of story. Anne Rice changed my opinion about many things in life. So she did same with werewolves. I can confess I hated werewolves, thought they were just "stupid dogs", but this book changed my opinion. Anne Rice showed these mythical creatures in other spotlight. As loving creatures with their own story and philosophy of life. She showed they aren't some heartless beasts. Anne as always turned some banal thing into something magical.Well, first half of book was...quite boring. But another half was amazing! In the end of book Anne came back to her incredible story telling and revealing secrets. I can say I usually "know" how book gonna end, but this time I had no idea it will end so good. So, in the conclusion I must say it wasn't as bad as people were reviewing everywhere, I wasn't disappointed. It is good book, interesting plot. But...one "but", this book doesn't have that charm Anne had in Vampires Chronicles. It's just...something's missing... Something is gone... But of course, it's different story, different plot. I can feel this book is very mature, calm. There are action scenes, but in all and all, it's calm book, relaxing. This type of book that you can just read and enjoy simple reading.Any way, I enjoyed every single page of this book. In 2014 March 6th it was translated and published in Lithuanian, so I got that book. Maybe it is because Lithuanian editions are bad and I really hate reading in my native language... But any way, I never believe what people review, I always read books and make my own opinion. Five stars and that's it. Good book for me.
