About the Author

Friedrich Nietzsche was born near Leipzig in 1844, the son of a Lutheran clergyman. At 24 he was appointed to the chair of classical philology at Basle University, where he stayed until forced by his health to retire in 1879. Here, he wrote all his literature, including Thus Spake Zarathustra, and developed his idea of the Superman. He became insane in 1889 and remained so until his death in 1900. R. J. Hollingdale translated eleven of Nietzsche's books and published two books about him; he also translated works by, among others, Schopenhauer, Goethe, E. T. A. Hoffmann, Lichtenberg and Theodor Fontane, many of these for Penguin Classics. He was the honorary president of the British Nietzsche Society. R. J. Hollingdale died on 28 September 2001.

R. J. Hollingdale was discerning enough to know that Nietzsche wanted to teach his audience to be more nuanced readers, and this reader is so friendly and accessible while still retaining the beauty of the philosopher's prose. Hollingdale's organizational approach of outlining the major tenants of Nietzsche is very useful if you find yourself bogged down or need a refresher course on a great philosopher. Walter Kaufmann's two translation collections are certainly wonderful, but they can be a little daunting for first-time readers. This is not an anthology: Hollingdale samples Nietzsche's oeuvre to elucidate and praise the diversity of one of the greatest philosophers. If you're interested in Nietzsche, I'd recommend this nifty guide as a primer; I know I would have been able to comprehend Nietzsche better if I had glanced through this book before diving into Human, All Too Human. Now, as a grad student, I use this concise collection to sharpen my knowledge and reign my interpretations in if I feel I'm misrepresenting Nietzsche's wonderfully written philosophy. One more note: you can't really go wrong with the other Hollingdale translations that Penguin publishes (or the Kaufmann texts). However, the Cambridge collections of Nietzsche's work are encouraged by many big names of contemporary philosophy as the new standard translation. Though I do know that most wouldn't be too opposed to the classic English renderings.

It's ok - a book for my philosophy class.Interesting yet not a book I would buy for recreational reading. I suppose I am just not that evolved.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a German philosopher, cultural critic, poet and composer, most known for his statement, "God is dead." He suffered a mental collapse, and spent the last eleven years of his life in a psychiatric clinic. He wrote many books, such as Basic Writings of Nietzsche,Thus Spoke Zarathustra,The Twilight of the Idols and The Anti-Christ, the posthumously-published Will to Power, etc. As a young man, he even tried his hand at composition ].This book is "a selection from his major philosophical works ... designed to give an overview of his thought, of his approach to the conventional problems of Western philosophy and of his own specific philosophy of the `will to power.'" It contains chapter divisions such as "Philosophy and Philosophers," "Morality," "Art and Aesthetics," "Religion," "Nihilism," "Will to Power," "Superman," "Eternal Recurrence," etc.He said, "This ... is how they go on: `...here is free-will, here there can be accusing, condemning, atonement and expiation: then let God be the sinner and man his redeemer: then let world-history be guilt, self-condemnation and suicide; thus will the offender become his own judge, the judge his own executioner.' This Christianity stood on its head... is the final lunge in the struggle of the theory of unconditional morality with that of unconditional freedom... the philosopher has thus to say, as Christ did, `judge not!' and the ultimate distinction between philosophical heads and the others would be that the former desire TO BE JUST, the others TO BE A JUDGE." (Pg. 81)He argues, "Thus the offender is punished because he employs `free-will'... because he acted without a reason when he ought to have acted in accordance with reasons. Why did he do this? But it is precisely this question that can no longer even be ASKED: it was a deed without a `for that reason', without motive, without origin, something purposeless and non-rational---But such a deed too ought... not to be punished!... The offender certainly preferred the worse reasons to the better, but WITHOUT reason or intention: he certainly failed to employ his intelligence, but NOT FOR THE PURPOSE of not employing it...for an offense to be punishable its perpetrator must have intentionally acted contrary to his intelligence---it is precisely this presupposition which is annulled by the assumption of `free will'..." That it also contains the history of one of the most ambitious and importunate souls, of a mind so superstitious as it was cunning, the history of the apostle Paul---who, apart from a few scholars, knows that? But without this remarkable history, without the storms and confusions of such a mind, of such a soul, there would be no Christianity; we would hardly have heard of a little Jewish sect whose master died on the cross..." (Pg. 173-174) He adds, "the intoxication of Paul is at its height... and the intractable lust for power reveals itself as an anticipatory reveling in DIVINE glories---This is the FIRST CHRISTIAN, the inventor of Christianness! Before him there were only a few Jewish sectarians." (Pg. 175-176)He points out, "Christianity has done its utmost to close the circle and declared even doubt to be a sin. One is supposed to be cast into belief without reason, by a miracle, and from then on to swim in it as in the brightest and least ambiguous of elements: even a glance towards land, even the thought that one perhaps exists for something else as well as swimming, even the slightest impulse of our amphibious nature---is sin! And notice that all this means that the foundation of belief and all reflection on its origin is likewise excluded as sinful. What is wanted are blindness and intoxication and an eternal song over the waves in which reason has drowned!" (Pg. 177)Even if you have read Nietzsche's full-scale books, this reader is a helpful topical compilation; and for those who simply want an "overview" of his thought in a broad range of areas, this is an excellent volume.

References to two different worlds may confuse some children and the text is stiff, contrasting sharply with the more lively dialogue and playful interaction found in another Pueblo tale, Valerie S. Carey's Quail Song (Putnam, 1990). The animal figures in the illustrations are static in the style of petrography and are unlikely to engage children who are accustomed to more animated art. Teachers may want to use this story in their multicultural curriculum, although many will find its documentation inadequate. We are a Disney family and Mulan is one of our favorites. My daughter and I love this book and it was the perfect nighttime story during Lunar New Year. Seeing Mulan as a feisty 7 year old is so fun and it's nice to have a new story with Disney characters instead of just a retelling of the movie.

I bought this book because a mentor let me borrow the original version (from the 60s) which is only "volume 1". I was excited to be buying an updated edition of the book that supposedly had the whole nervous system!However. This is not the original. The new authors took the original idea (programmed learning) and bastardized it... Basically, it's just a massive fill-in-the-blank. It's not even laid out like the old one, where you can just flip the page to the next page to see the answer, then again to see the next question, and so forth. Rather, this one has the answer on the back of the page you're on. This may seem like a subtle change, but trust me, it's noticeably harder to use this way. You have to keep flipping back and forth, checking the question number of the answer you're looking for, and, because there are so MANY fill in the blanks, a given question will have 5 or more... And you will find yourself counting the stupid blanks to find the right answer. Plus, because I guess the new authors wanted to expand the amount of information presented, there's just too many fill in the blanks and not enough repetition, which defeats the whole purpose of programmed learning, which relies on repetition over increasing time periods in order to learn new information.Basically, the beginning of this text, which is most similar to the original, is still okay, but the further you get in (around the time it starts talking about cerebellum and thalamus), the information is no longer usable.Not to mention all the errors. Lines in diagrams are pointing to the wrong objects, answers are just plain wrong.. I found myself having to check the answers on a second neuroanatomy book.Anyway... If you can find the original edition, get that one instead. Note to publisher: print more copies of the original!!!!! And maybe get some authors to finally write a volume 2 in the original intention.

Super helpful! I never would have thought I would be a programmed learning type, but the vastness of neuroanatomy makes this kind of tool really helpful, and I have found it to be super helpful. It was recommended to me by fellow MD and PA students. My one piece of advice is to get this book before your neuro anatomy courses start and start working through it because otherwise there is just not enough time if you start in the middle of the course as I did.

As a postgraduate student (from 1970s) in Psychology I wanted to review and update my brain anatomy to be able to understand newer findings from the imaging techniques that have revolutionized my field. Sidman's text has been the most valuable of the many that I have purchased. His interactive approach to the brain is unique. It involves labeling and completing anatomical drawings of various stuctures with their function--this integration enables you to understand a system without having to memorize substructures that out of functional context are difficult to remember. By also working with the Human Brain Coloring Book (Diamond), I am making remarkable progress very quickly and enjoyably. A true gem.

Never learned neuroanatomy better than using this book! This book is tedious but I can guarantee by the end of going though this you would know neuroanatomy very throughly! Wish they would give this book in graduate school because this book definitely helped me get through my third quarter of anatomy in dental school.For those who are struggling, purchase this book and do it everyday religiously. You will know it forwards and backward by the end of it!

Such a simple, and dare I say it, fun way of learning neuroanatomy. If you're a medical student, seriously just buy this book and complete it at the beginning of your neuroscience course (the 50 bucks isn't much compared to the hundreds of thousands in debt you've already signed up for). My professor recommended this book, and after reading the positive reviews of it on here, I decided to give it a try. Trust me when I tell you that doing so put me well ahead of my classmates when it came to a spatial/functional understanding of the CNS. I used this book and "Clinical Neuroanatomy Made Ridiculously Simple", and I crushed the first exam related to this material. These two resources have been beyond helpful in studying medical neuroscience. Good luck!!

For all the positive reviews of this book, I find that it has quite a few errors. (The example that is annoying me right now is on page 556 the superior salivatory nucleus is labelled in one spot, and on the next answer key on page 558, it is in a different spot.) Overall still helpful, but conflicting information page to page makes for a frustrating learning experience. In addition, many of the blanks provided for writing in answers are impossibly small, as are the diagrams that need labeling.

Very hard to understand the subject and too confusing in many chapters. I would not recommend it to any student taking this class in the winter or summer sessions as there's not enough time to cover the whole book. You'll need a lot more time than three weeks to cover this book and review it thoroughly. Don't take this class unless you're sure you can pass it.

If you were to buy one book to learn Neuroanatomy this is the one to buy. It is, as the title states, a programmed learning tool, which in this case uses a fill in the blank methodology to teach you different anatomical names, locations, and purposes. Besides structural location this book also reviews Brodmann Areas as well. I only wish I had it when I first began to learn Neuroanatomy. It would have saved me a lot of time and frustration.

We used this book for a quick trip to these two cities, and found it very useful. Be sure to get the the most recent (2016) edition as it includes the most up-to-date information, e.g. about the AME church where the massacre occurred. However, we relied on TripAdvisor also for current info and ratings of restaurants, tours, and the like -- our favorite restaurant (R Kitchen) and tour (Two Sisters Tour) in Charleston weren't in the book, and one restaurant it recommended was closed. The book did us a huge favor in telling us about the town of Beaufort, between Savannah and Charleston, where we had a delightful morning and lunch at a recommended restaurant (Blackstone's Cafe). Overall, it's definitely worth it to have this book in hand if you're visiting these cities!

Very useful. Lots of maps of Charleston/Savannah and surrounding areas. Lots of info about places to eat, things to do & see. In fact, it was so useful that I now know I don't want to vacation there. Pretty much all there is to do in Charleston - visit a slave plantation (not a good experience for some Americans), visit boring Fort Sumter, walk along Battery Row, and eat at some good restaurants - you can do in 2 days. So if you're fine doing all that in the first couples days and then just hanging out on the beaches, go to Charleston. Otherwise, go somewhere else.

I have been doing laundry for almost 50 years. Recently lots of stains seemed to be staying on my clothes. This great little book seems to have helped me solve this problem. There are recipes for easy to make spot removers for several kinds of stain. The one for blood removed what I think was a blood stain that had been on a pillow case for quite a while. If you are not a laundry genius, I highly recommend this book.

I originally found this book for 25 cents at a library book sale. I have subsequently purchased another 5 used copies at minimal prices. It doesn't have every household problem solution, but this is a great book (used) to throw in as part of a gift set for the young adult first moving into their own apartment. It lessens the amount of phone calls that start with "How should I clean....." or "I have a stain on my new sweater...."

I have had this book for a very long time and have given it to my kids and now to my granddaughter

Was very disappointed in this book. The original version was wonderful with homemade remedies for all cleaning purposes. This version, however, wants you to buy all kinds of products (which the author sells) and no longer gives the homemade recipes for the cleaning compounds.

Instead of googling, why not have this handy reference. I read it awhile ago. Don't remember if it had a clothing label guide (like for all the crazy symbols) or gave opinions on what type of machines to use.

I have her original book and her book about laundry. I needed to refer to this one when my sister was visiting, and when she started reading it, she was fascinated. I ordered the most recent version for her birthday and now wish I had ordered it for myself as well. The updated book has additional tips and a section in the back that give substitutions (i.e., the substitution for fabric softener is vinegar in the rinse cycle). This has been my go-to book for many years. Couldn't do without it!!!

For those of us who are not domestic goddesses! I knew the basics of cleaning, but in this book I learned how to get it done better with fewer toxic products

The book was a disappointment. The author tries to sell you her products to clean things. I was hoping the book gave homemade remedies.
