I was very excited to receive my new reference book. My last was a 2008 copy. I was shortly disappointed with it. So many artists have been left out or their list of records were cut from dozens to only 2 or 3 records. Also, the sections for soundtracks and Various Artists have totally been left out. I would not buy this again.
This books is a must have for anyone who owns vinyl. Prices, and popularity vary through the years, but anyone can get a good, general idea of relative worth by looking through one of these books. I especially like the information on grading, and variations. What may at first seem to be a great record at a a great price may turn out to be a switched cover, or a later pressing. This book helps identify the differences. It contains good information for anyone.
I needed to determine the value of about 300 old 45s and maybe half that many lps, all from the 50s and 60s. I found all but one 45 in the book (that were within that time period), and was unable to locate a few albums from noted artists of that era. Otherwise, it worked perfectly and enabled me to accomplish what I set out to do--establish a value for nearly all of my old records.It was well worth the money, and I learned a lot of interesting facts in the process.
I have a 1998 falling-apart edition of this guide and it's excellent...I use it daily for my eBay listings since I like to show the year of an album. I got this to replace the raggedy old guide due to the glowing reviews...but here are literally the first 2 things I looked up. Valjean "Theme From Ben Casy" an instrumental LP based on a hit single. Not there! No Valjean at all. Next, Lenny Welch, "Since I Fell For You", again an LP based on a hit. Well Lenny Welch is listed...with one obscure 45! Nothing of his Cadence singles or LPs, nothing of 8 other labels that released his records! In both cases my old American Records guide by Tim Neely had complete listings for these and fortunately I was in time to retrieve it from the trash. For people that don't need to know the year of every specific record, "Rockin' Records" is a far, far more thorough guide (though for non-major artists they often have a range of years per label instead of listing absolutely every title the way the old American Records does). Avoid this guide unless all you care about is the exaggerated worth of your Beatles and Elvis records.

Not as good as Tim Neely's "Standard Catalog Of American Records 1950-1975 (Fifth Edition). That is the one to have if you can find a copy.
