#16,562 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I'm afraid the author lost all credibility with me on the very first page, when he gave Stewart's birthday as January 20. In fact, his birthday was May 20, as documented in many sources. (It happens to be my birthday as well, which is why I am so annoyed at this error.) How can the author expect us to believe any of his information if he couldn't be bothered to check such basic information as a birthdate?

This book seemed to start off well, and then the author began to get too opinionated throughout. However, I stuck with it because I was eagerly anticipating the chapters on Stewart's Hitchcock films, and maybe learn some new facts about the relationships with Hitch and his co-stars. So what happens? The author opines that Hitchcock is "overrated", says REAR WINDOW was the only Hitchcock film that Stewart was in that has any value, dismisses VERTIGO completely (which is acknowledged by many to be one of the greatest films ever made and is my personal favorite), and quickly moves on after a paragraph to the next subject. I shut down my Kindle in disgust and have no interest in finishing the book now.

An interesting book but I note some inaccuracies that could have been avoided with careful fact-checking. One example: The author states that Mr. Stewart was recruited in 1955 to appear on television's GE Theatre as a move against the popularity of the show Bonanza on a competing network. This could not be correct as Bonanza premiered on NBC in 1959.

This book seems to simply be a list of his movies with little comments about each. The ending is wrong. This book claims Mr. Stewart died at 90 in his sleep. He was 89 and he passed of a blood clot. His last words were I'm going to be with Gloria. Not possible if he was sleeping.

There are several odd things about this book much of which is based upon the author's interviews with Stewart, his wife Gloria and Henry Fonda. The most glaring thing is Gloria remembering and talking about things in Jimmy's life that she was not there for. She talks about Jimmy "coming home" and discussing Jean Arthur's insecurity on the movie "You Can't Take it With You". Jimmy was making that movie with Jean in 1938. Gloria wasn't in his life then, she hadn't even had her first marriage at that time. She didn't marry Stewart until 1949! This is just one of numerous examples of memories she has that must have been reconstructed from actual or fanciful events of which she had no part in. On another matter: When talking about the mafia the author states that Marilyn Monroe was killed. This is unequivocally false. She died from drug interactions prescribed by two different physicians.

A fairly good biography. However, it seems the author had no adversion to repeating gossip and unsubstantiated rumors regarding Mr. Stewart's alleged "temper and racist attitudes". It also contained little of Mr. Stewarts war record, combat experiences, or even an accounting of all the known missions in which he took a documented part. It was written in that somewhat odd British fashion which is explained, of course, by the simple fact that the author is British. It also contained numerous typo's and a few factual inconsistencies. Still, even with those defeciencies noted, worth reading to add to ones knowledge of Mr. Stewart's life. But it should never be the only biography read if one wants to really "get to know" Jimmy Stewart.

Not what I expected. There was some useful information, but there was a lot of build up that never was fulfilled. Example Stewart's break with the director Anthony Mann was hyped but never explained in detail. Quite a lot of errors such as spelling and not getting Stewart's name in Harvey correct until late in the book.

I suppose if you are a biographer you are doing a poor job if you fail to research your subject completely. This author certainly did to the point of providing a synopsis of almost every Jimmy Stewart film. I found this a bit tedious, having seen most of the movies myself. I guess there are other readers who have not, and perhaps the stories of the movies add a dimension to Stewart for them. Here are several of my observations: It seemed that more words are said about Stewart loving Margaret Sullivan than are said about his loving Gloria Stewart; Sullivan is a theme throughout the book. There are few quotes about the Jimmy/Gloria marriage. Although Gloria adds a lot of information to the story, there is little about their personal relationship. It does not seem to have been a "cozy-up-by-the-fire-together" relationship.......which obviously worked for them. There is some interesting info about the communist hunt in Hollywood, and J. Edgar Hoover, and a lot about Henry Fonda. Some of the observations about directors and other stars is entertaining. Stewart had several significant, abrupt, and long-lasting disagreements with friends and family.I would have liked to know more about his business dealings. His income/net worth is never really spelled-out although there are references to what he was paid per picture. There is only one teeny reference to real estate holdings and investments. That is an equal part of the man as far as I'm concerned. The book ends on a "down" note rather than ending as celebrating Jimmy Stewart and his accomplishments.
