Brave New Arctic by Mark Serreze provides a thoughtful and personal history of arctic research. Dr. Serreze describes how he was originally somewhat of a skeptic regarding climate change but in the face of overwhelming evidence has now become convinced that the Arctic is undergoing changes that are unprecedented in the historical record. The author starts with his own history as a young "cub scientist" out on the ice caps of Ellesmere Island, and describes the scientists and their changing views of the Arctic over the past 30 years. The book has a good mixture of both science and story that will keep the interest of both experts in the field and the general public.
It is a good body of work that explains in detail about the changes taking place in the Arctic and how do these changes affect the entire planet and its population. With that being said, I found this book a tad difficult to follow. It could be because I am not acquainted with the field and not that something is wrong with the narrative.
In many ways this is a "horror story" - how climate change has passed a tipping point. The author, a climate scientist, gets "wonky" at times, he explains climate research in a way that makes it understandable to the reader. That he was - for some years - a skeptic of climate change makes his narrative all the more convincing.
By experiential I mean that the author gives you the feeling of actually being there during his scientific visits - then there is all of the historical data.
Mark Serreze does an excellent job not only explaining the concepts of arctic amplification, but also the difficulties in discerning what is true climate change and what is natural climate variability. Neither change nor scientific knowledge moves in a straight line.
This is a 30 year journey through the ice, the data, and the new understandings about what the ice was saying.I found it well written as a story that makes the scientific process understandable.
Provides a valuable perspective not only on the specifics of Arctic warming but on how climate scientists work and are cautious in making predictions and assigning reasons for "natural" change.
